There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from nearby Thailand, in which gambling den gambling is not legal. Eight gambling halls are established in a relatively small location in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent area, a 3 to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; although, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 0900 to 1700, and despite the fact visas are apparently necessary to pass, there are ways around this, as is true of many borders.
The initial Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary barge casino, features one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are 150 slot machines and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 one armed bandits and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational vacation and hotel building that features numerous amenities aside from the gambling hall, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machines and eighty eight table games.
