There is a captivating background to the Cambodia casinos that lie just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where casino gaming is prohibited. Eight casinos are anchored in a relatively tiny location in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect area, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; although, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 1700, and although visas are for all intents and purposes required to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is accurate of most borders.
The first Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored barge casino, contains one hundred and fifty slot machine games and sixty tables. The Naga river boat is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slots and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and 66 of the normal table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international resort and hotel building that highlights many amenities aside from the casino, which has ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slots and 88 table games.
